As of August 31, 2026, Dead Sea is at -441.33 m. The Dead Sea's surface is the lowest land elevation on Earth, and it keeps falling about 1.1-1.2 m per year. Since the 1930s, when the level was near -390 m, it has dropped roughly 50 m, accelerating from about 17 cm a year before 1973 to over 1 m a year since 2001. Studies project the sea will not vanish, with models pointing to a new equilibrium near -550 m in 100-150 years.
A terminal lake loses water only by evaporation, so the sea lives or dies by inflow. The Jordan River historically delivered about 1,300 million cubic metres a year, but Israel's National Water Carrier (1964), Jordan's King Abdullah Canal, and dams on the Yarmouk cut that to roughly 20-100 MCM of degraded water today.
